Ear Reshaping
Prominent ears are extremely common, hard to hide and always present. There are varying degrees of ear shape issues, ranging from very mild projection or prominence with normal ear folds and contours. Ear reshaping, also called otoplasty surgery, corrects prominent or protruding ears and sets them back closer to the head or reduces them in size. Individuals of almost any age are candidates for otoplasty.
The Otoplasty procedure
During the otoplasty procedure small incisions are made inconspicuously behind the ears. Occasionally, the ear cartilage is reshaped during otoplasty. Using dissolvable sutures for the incision line during otoplasty, no suture removal will be required. Scars are also non invisible after the procedure, as the incision is usually made on the back of the auricle. Wound healing is usually completed very quickly. Patients can return to work or school after a few days.
An otoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. I will thoroughly discuss your or your child’s desires and expectations for ear correction surgery with you during my consultation. Together we will carefully review the otoplasty procedure.
